Use tabs to multitask in Evernote

What are tabs?

Tabs in Evernote for Desktop let you open multiple notes, notebooks, and other views side by side — just like tabs in a web browser. Instead of navigating back and forth, you can keep several items open at once and switch between them instantly.

Open a new tab

There are several ways to open a new tab:

  • Keyboard shortcut: Press Shift+Cmd+T (Mac) or Alt+Shift+T (Windows).
  • Click the + button: Click the + button in the tab bar to open a new tab.
  • Cmd/Ctrl+click: Hold Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (Windows) and click a link inside a note to open it in a new tab.
  • Right-click: Right-click a note, notebook, or other item and select the option to open it in a new tab.

Switch between tabs

Click any tab in the tab bar to switch to it. You can also use keyboard shortcuts:

  • Next tab: Ctrl+Tab (Mac and Windows)
  • Previous tab: Ctrl+Shift+Tab (Mac and Windows)
  • Jump to a specific tab: Cmd+Ctrl+1 through Cmd+Ctrl+9 (Mac) or Ctrl+Shift+1 through Ctrl+Shift+9 (Windows)

Close a tab

Hover over a tab and click the X button that appears, or use Cmd+W (Mac) / Ctrl+W (Windows) to close the active tab. If you close the last remaining tab, a new default tab will automatically open.

Reorder tabs

Drag and drop tabs in the tab bar to rearrange them in any order you prefer.

Duplicate a tab

Right-click a tab and select Duplicate Tab to open a copy of the current view in a new tab.

Pin a tab

If you want a tab to stay in place while you work, you can pin it. Right-click a tab and select Pin Tab. Pinned tabs appear at the front of the tab bar and display only an icon to save space. To learn more, see Pin and unpin tabs in Evernote.

Tab types

Tabs aren't limited to notes. You can open any of the following views in a tab:

  • Notes
  • Notebooks
  • Home
  • Calendar
  • Tasks
  • Search
  • Spaces
  • Trash
  • Shared content
  • Files
  • Templates

Each tab displays an icon matching its content type so you can identify your open tabs at a glance.

Your tabs are saved automatically

Evernote remembers your open tabs, including their order and which tabs are pinned. When you close and reopen the app, your tabs will be restored exactly as you left them.
