The new note editor in Evernote

The note editor now has a more refined, streamlined, and modern appearance, and provides a foundation to build modern editor features in the future.

Some notable features include:

  • Readability. You can now adjust the note width to align with best practices for optimizing the reading experience.
  • Text styles. Custom semantic headers allow you to specify large header, small header, and other common text styles.
  • New Insert menu. Easily insert attachments, tables, code blocks, and more.
  • New checklists. Recognize at a glance which to-do list items need your attention.
  • Smarter paste. Struggling with getting content to match the styling of your note? We took care of that.
  • Highlighter colors. Choose from several different highlighter colors to call attention to various areas of text.

The new editor is available in the new Evernote for Mac, Windows, and iOS, and in Evernote Web on Chrome, Safari, Opera, and Firefox.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the note editor?

The note editor in Evernote is the area of the app where you add text, attachments, and other content to your note—in other words, the area where you create and edit a note.

Why did you build a new editor?

The new editor was redesigned to offer a more refined, streamlined, and modern appearance, and to create a foundation to build modern editor features in the future. It will also help us manage inconsistencies and bugs across platforms.

What features are not yet available in the new editor?

  • Non-PDF file attachment previews
  • Context
  • Google Drive integration
  • Presentation mode

Is my note content safe when using the new editor?

All of your note content is safe. However, you may notice that it looks a little different. You may also notice that some features are not fully implemented just yet, such as previews for certain file types.

What are some expected behaviors?

When switching between the classic editor and new editor, you may notice that certain content shifts around slightly. In particular:

  • HTML content like web clips or pasted HTML may get simplified in different ways, depending on the editor.
  • Attachments (files and images) in the middle of paragraphs and lists will be separated into new paragraphs in the new editor.

How do I change the font?

You can select a font and a font size from the formatting bar. Additionally, you can adjust the relative size of the text by selecting a heading type, such as normal text, small header, large header, etc.

How do I change the width of the white space in a note?

By default, the note body is sized to fit the window. To optimize the note body for maximum readability, click the "More options" button (3 vertical dots) in the upper right corner of the note, click Note width, then select a note width option.

How do I encrypt text in a note?

To encrypt text, use your cursor to highlight the text you want to encrypt, then hold Cmd + Shift + X (Mac) or Ctrl + Shift + X (Windows) on your keyboard. A prompt will appear for you to set your custom passphrase. Do not forget this passphrase because Evernote does not store this information anywhere.

To decrypt the text in the future, click on the encrypted text and select Reveal encrypted content.... You will be prompted to enter your passphrase. You may also permanently decrypt the text by selecting Decrypt permanently....

Please note that you can only encrypt plain text content. If your selection includes anything other than text, such as images, tables, or non-text content, you will not be able to encrypt it.

How do I provide feedback?

You can pass along any feedback or bugs, and generally let us know what works for you and what doesn't, by clicking Send feedback in the bottom left corner of the window.

I don't like it. Can I go back?

Editor switching menu

For a limited time, you can switch back to the classic editor in Evernote Web by clicking New Editor in the bottom right corner of the window, then selecting Switch to classic editor.

Note: You cannot switch to the classic editor in Firefox.

What is going to happen to the classic editor?

We're preparing to fully transition to the new editor. This means that soon the new editor will be the only available option in Evernote Web and all next-generation Evernote apps. We will notify classic editor users ahead of time.
