Export notes and notebooks as ENEX or HTML

Using Evernote for Mac or Windows, you can export a copy of any note and save it to your computer. You can choose to save your notes as an Evernote XML file (.enex) or as HTML files (.html). To export notes quickly, you can export entire notebooks. This is useful for moving content from one Evernote account to another.

Export your notes to:

  • Create backup copies of your content
  • Merge the contents of two Evernote accounts
  • Move notes from a personal account to a business account

To export notes or notebooks, follow the steps for your operating system below.

  • Mac

    The new Evernote for Mac
    1. Select a notebook or the specific notes that you want to export.
    2. Right-click on selected note(s) and select Export....
    3. Select a file format (ENEX, single-page HTML, or multi-page HTML).
    4. Check or uncheck the attributes you'd like to export with your notes (e.g., tags, created date, author).
    5. Click Export. The file will be saved to your computer's desktop.
    Older version of Evernote for Mac
    1. Click on a note or hold down the command key and click to select multiple notes.
    2. Right-click on selected note(s) and select Export Note(s)....
    3. Make sure Evernote XML format (.enex) is selected.
    4. Optional. Check 'Include tags for each note' if you want to import the tags.
    5. Click Save.
  • Windows

    The new Evernote for Windows
    1. Select a notebook or the specific notes that you want to export.
    2. Right-click on selected note(s) and select Export....
    3. Select a file format (ENEX, single-page HTML, or multi-page HTML).
    4. Check or uncheck the attributes you'd like to export with your notes (e.g., tags, created date, author).
    5. Click Export. The file will be saved to your computer's desktop.
    Older version of Evernote for Windows
    1. Click on a note or hold down the Ctrl key and click to select multiple notes.
    2. Right-click on selected note(s) and select Export Note(s)....
    3. Select Export as file in ENEX format (.enex) from the menu and click Export.
    4. Choose the file name and location, then click Save.

A few notes about exporting content:

  • Evernote currently supports exporting up to 50 notes at a time or entire notebooks.
  • If exporting as an ENEX file, you can select the maximum file size of each ENEX file between 300 MB to 2 GB.
  • If exporting as a single-page HTML file, you will receive a single HTML file with all notes and a single folder that contains all note resources (e.g., attachments, files).
  • If exporting as a multi-page HTML file, you will receive an HTML file for each note, a single folder that contains all note resources (e.g., attachments, files), and an index that links all of the HTML files.
  • Attributes will be stored as metadata in the HTML or ENEX file.
