spreadsheet preview

When you add a spreadsheet to a note, you will see a preview of the file in your note by default, and have the ability to scroll and click through different tabs without having to open the file.

The spreadsheet preview is available on Evernote for Mac, Windows, and Web and is view-only. You must open the file in order to make changes. To edit a spreadsheet, click on the attachment header and select the Open icon.

Supported file types:

  • .csv
  • .xls
  • .xlsx
  • .ods
  • .xlt
  • .xltx

Preview limits

Visual characteristics: Certain characteristics of a spreadsheet may not be visible in the spreadsheet preview such as charts, images, frozen panes, or certain stylized formatting like font color.

File size: File sizes over 20MB will appear as a clickable attachment by default, and can later be switched to preview mode. File sizes over 50MB can not be viewed in preview mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I change the view option for my file?

To change how a spreadsheet is displayed in a note: Click on the attachment header, click the More Options button (three dots), and select Attachment or Preview.

To change the default view option going forward: Click the Settings button (gear) next to your name at the top of the left navigation menu, go to Preferences > Notes, and select a default view from the dropdown options under “Links and attachments”.

I added a Google Sheet to a note but it is displaying as a link and not a preview. How do I view a preview of Google Sheets?

Since Google Sheets are inserted as clickable links, you will need to download the file as a spreadsheet and attach to your note in order to see the preview. To download a Google file: Open the file and select File > Download > Microsoft Excel (.xlsx) or Comma Separated Value (.csv).
