Introduction
Meeting Detection helps you remember to record meetings in Evernote. When Evernote detects microphone activity from a supported meeting app or browser-based call, it can notify you to start a Meeting Recorder note.
Meeting Detection is available in Evernote for Mac and Windows. Detection happens on your device. Audio and screen data used to detect meetings are not sent to Evernote’s servers.
Set up Meeting Detection
- Open Settings.
- Select Notifications.
- Find Meeting detection and select Set up.
- Allow the requested permissions.
On macOS, Evernote needs:
- Notifications
- Microphone access
- Screen & System Audio Recording, to detect browser-based video calls
On Windows, Evernote needs notification access.
You may need to restart Evernote after changing system permissions.
Choose how Meeting Detection works
When a meeting starts
Choose what Evernote should do when it detects that you’ve joined a meeting:
- Do not remind me: Evernote won’t notify you when a meeting starts
- Remind me to start recording: Evernote shows a notification asking whether you want to start a Meeting Recorder note. You choose when to begin recording.
- Start recording automatically: Evernote immediately starts a Meeting Recorder note when it detects the meeting.
When a meeting ends
Choose what Evernote should do when it detects that the meeting has ended while a recording is active:
- Do not remind me: Evernote won’t prompt you when the meeting ends. Your recording continues until you stop it.
- Remind me to stop recording: Evernote asks whether you want to stop or keep the recording.
- Stop recording automatically: Evernote stops the active meeting recording as soon as it detects that the meeting has ended.
These choices are independent. For example, you can have Evernote start recordings automatically but ask before stopping them.
Start recording when a meeting begins
When Evernote detects a supported meeting, you’ll receive a notification such as Start a meeting note?
Select the notification to open a new Meeting Recorder note and begin recording. Meeting Detection can recognize common meeting apps and browser-based calls, including Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Webex, Slack, Discord, FaceTime, and others.
If you select Start recording automatically, Evernote starts the Meeting Recorder without asking first.
A calendar connection isn’t required. Meeting Detection can work even when the meeting isn’t on your calendar.
Finish recording when a meeting ends
If you selected Reminder to stop recording, Evernote displays a Recording still going prompt when the meeting ends. You can:
- Stop recording
- Keep recording
- Go to the note
- Be reminded later
If you selected Stop recording automatically, Evernote stops the active meeting recording when the meeting ends.
After recording, you can use AI Meeting Notes to generate a transcript, identify speakers, and create a summary.
FAQ
Does Meeting Detection record everything my microphone hears?
No. Meeting Detection monitors microphone activity and meeting-app information locally to identify when a meeting may have started or ended. It does not send audio or screen data to Evernote for detection.
If you start a recording, the recording and any transcription are handled separately according to Evernote’s AI and privacy policies.
Is Meeting Detection available on mobile or the web?
Meeting Detection is currently available in the Evernote desktop app for Mac and Windows. It isn’t available on mobile or Evernote Web.
Why didn’t Evernote detect my meeting?
Check that:
- Meeting Detection is enabled in Settings > Notifications.
- Required system permissions are enabled.
- The meeting app or browser call is using your microphone.
- You aren’t already recording another note.
Can I turn Meeting Detection off?
Yes. Open Settings > Notifications and set the meeting start and end options to Do not remind me, or turn off the Meeting Detection setting.
