Frequently Asked Questions

Is my data private and secure?

Absolutely. Your notes and personal information remain yours. Individual accounts are always kept separate, and your content is never exposed to other users.

How is my data used?

Evernote does not use your content to train AI models and does not permit third parties to use your content to train AI models.

For AI Assistant specifically:

  • Data sent to the third-party (OpenAI) is processed only to respond to your request.
  • All data is deleted immediately after the response, with zero retention.
  • OpenAI does not use your data to train their models.

Semantic Search uses Evernote’s internal AI models. To help you find the most relevant content, Evernote performs an advanced form of note indexing, which occurs securely on Evernote’s servers and no content is shared externally.

For AI Meeting Notes: audio transcription processing occurs entirely within Evernote's internal models, while for audio summarization some data may be shared and processed by a third-party AI vendor. Only the specific audio recording that you choose to transcribe will be referenced.

Can I control these AI features?

Yes. You are in full control. All features are activated by default, but you will be able to enable or disable each feature at any time based on your preferences in your settings, where you will find a toggle to decide which AI features you would like to enable in your account.

  • On desktop/web: Go to Settings > Preferences > AI features.
  • On mobile: Go to Settings > AI features.

Even when enabled, AI features will only activate when you explicitly trigger them, for example, starting a chat with the AI Assistant, performing a search, or transcribing a recording.

Who owns the content?

Your data is yours. Putting notes and other content into Evernote does not change that content's ownership or copyright status. If the data was yours to begin with, it remains yours after you put it in Evernote. If the data wasn’t yours to begin with, putting it in Evernote doesn’t make it yours.

What types of content can AI process?

Currently, AI features will only work with the text content of your notes. Support for attachments and other media is coming soon.

Note: This page will be updated as we release additional features and capabilities in the coming weeks.
