On iOS and Android, you can customize the create button to work the way you want, putting your most-used actions at your fingertip.
Set up the create button
To set up the create button, follow these steps:
- In Evernote, tap the three horizontal lines in the bottom left corner to open the navigation menu.
- Tap the gear at the top right corner.
- Tap Create Button.
- Select a button style.
- Select the button actions.
- Tap Save changes.
Button styles
There are seven different button styles, each with individual options and configurations.
Default
The default button style, also called the + New button, allows you to choose up to 6 actions. Tap the + New button to reveal your chosen actions.
The default button has unique swipe abilities that none of the other buttons have. When you swipe right on the button (without tapping it), you can quickly open a blank task editor. When you swipe left, you can quickly create a blank, new note.
Crescent
The crescent button style allows you to choose up to 5 actions. Tap the + button to reveal your chosen actions.
Orbs
The orbs button style allows you to choose up to 3 actions. The actions are always visible at the bottom of the screen (except, of course, when in the note editor) and allow for quick, one-tap access to your actions.
Split
The split button style allows up to 8 actions. The + New note portion of the button will always create a new, blank note. The remaining chosen actions are visible when tapping the arrow on the right side of the button.
Tip: In this style, it may be redundant to select the “note” action since the large button will always create a new note. Choosing the other 8 actions will allow you to use all 9 actions with this style.
Pancake
The pancake button style allows you to choose up to 8 actions. Tap the + button to reveal your chosen actions.
Bottoms up
The bottoms-up button style allows you to choose up to 9 actions. Tap the + button to reveal your chosen actions.
Floating
The floating button style allows you to choose up to 7 actions. Tap the + button to reveal your chosen actions.
Note: The floating + button cannot be moved from the bottom right corner.
Button actions
When you select a button style, you’ll also be able to choose the button actions. The number of button actions you can choose depends on the button style you’ve chosen. The following button actions are available:
- Attachment - Opens your operating system’s file picker.
- Audio - Creates a new, blank note and begins recording immediately.
- Camera - Opens the camera in Evernote.
- Note - Creates a new, blank note.
- Scan - Opens the camera in Evernote.
- Sketch - Opens the sketch editor.
- Task - Opens the blank task editor.
- Task Note - Creates a new note with a blank task in the note body.
- Template - Opens the Evernote template gallery.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reorder the actions of my button?
The order the actions are in (represented by the blue number in a circle) determines the order they are shown when tapping. Tap the actions in the order you want them to be displayed.
For the default button, action 1 will be the large left button, action 2 will be the large right button, and the remaining 4 actions will be the small buttons from left to right.
For all other buttons, actions are displayed in order from left to right, or bottom to top, depending on the style.
Can I set up swipe gestures for my button?
Swipe gestures are not currently customizable, and are only available as part of the default create button. You cannot add swipes to other button styles.
Can I change the color or icon of the actions?
No.
