Comments are a beta feature, and improvements are coming in future releases. Please suggest improvements at this link.
Comments are available on:
- On desktop, starting from Evernote 10.129.2.
- On mobile, starting from Evernote 10.129.1.
- On the lite editor and web, they are available immediately.
If you open a note that contains Comments using a version of Evernote that does not support them, you will see a warning message. Since modifications could unintentionally affect other people’s Comments, we recommend updating Evernote.
Overview
Comments in Evernote let you add feedback and have discussions directly within your notes. Whether you’re collaborating with a team, reviewing your work, or jotting down ideas for later, Comments help you keep everything in context—right where it matters.
With Comments, you can:
- Provide targeted feedback: Add comments on specific parts of your text without altering the note itself.
- Collaborate in context: Start a discussion by replying directly to comments.
- Track decisions and ideas: Resolve or delete comments when they’re no longer needed.
- See who said what: Each comment displays the author’s name and profile picture.
- Stay in sync: Comments sync instantly across devices so your conversations are always up to date.
- Keep threaded discussions: Support multiple comments within a single thread.
How to use comments
To access the full functionality described below, use the mobile, desktop, or web versions. Editing capabilities in the Lite editor will be available soon. For now, you can view comments in the Lite editor, but you cannot create or modify them.
Adding a comment
- Select the text you want to comment on.
- Click the comment icon on the right margin of the note.
- Type your comment and press Enter (or click the arrow) to save it.
Replying to a comment
- Click on an existing comment thread.
- Type your reply in the text box.
- Press Enter (or click the arrow) to post your response.
Editing or deleting a comment
- Click on the comment thread.
- Hover over the comment you want to edit or delete.
- Click the three dots that appear.
- Select Edit comment or Delete comment.
Deleting a comment thread
- Click on the comment thread.
- Delete: Click the three dots at the top of the thread and select Delete thread.
Email notifications for comments
You can now receive email notifications when someone adds a comment. Here’s how it works:
- For a new comment, only the note owner is notified.
- For a reply to an existing thread, notifications are sent to the note owner and anyone who has previously commented in that thread.
To reduce inbox clutter, Evernote applies rate limits per user:
- No more than 1 email per hour per note
- A global cap of 3 emails per hour
This feature is available starting from version 10.140.1.
What’s coming next?
We’re just getting started! Here’s what we’re working on next for Comments:
Edit comments in the Lite Editor
Soon, you’ll be able to add and edit comments in Evernote’s Lite Editor.
Commenting on images
We’re exploring ways to allow you to leave comments on images, not just on text.
Resolve threads
Want to archive comment threads but still keep them accessible? We’re working on a way to resolve threads while preserving them for future reference.
Hide all comments
Want to focus on your note without distractions? You’ll soon be able to hide all comments.
List of known problems
As a beta feature, Comments have some limitations that we plan to address in future releases:
- Editing issues: If someone edits a note containing comments using an Evernote version that doesn’t support comments, their modifications could unintentionally affect other people’s comments.
Your feedback helps shape what’s next! Let us know what you think here and how we can make Comments even better. 🚀
