Customize Home

Customize Home in Evernote

When you customize your Home, you put the information you need front and center, so you can see exactly what you want, just the way you like it. Customization options are available to Evernote Premium, Personal, Professional, and Teams customers (and vary by plan), and includes:

  • Changing or removing the background image
  • Adding, removing, and reordering widgets
  • Resizing widgets (desktop and web only)
  • Seeing exactly the notes you want on Home with the filtered notes widget
  • Adding multiple copies of some widgets (Professional and Teams only)
  • Changing the scratch pad color and title

Change the background image

You can select an image from our gallery of images, or upload your own. If you choose to upload your own image, the recommended size is 2000 x 1280 px. You can upload a .jpg or .png file up to 5 MB. To change the background image, follow the steps for your operating system below.

  • Mac

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Click the "Change" button.
    3. Select or upload an image, then click Select.
    4. Click Done to save your changes.
  • Windows

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Click the "Change" button.
    3. Select or upload an image, then click Select.
    4. Click Done to save your changes.
  • iOS

    1. From Home, tap the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Tap Change background.
    3. Select or upload an image.
    4. Tap Done to save your changes.
  • Android

    1. From Home, tap the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Tap Change background.
    3. Select or upload an image.
    4. Tap Done to save your changes.
  • Web

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Click the "Change" button.
    3. Select or upload an image, then click Select.
    4. Click Done to save your changes.

Remove the background image

To remove the background image, follow the steps for your operating system below.

  • Mac

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Click the green toggle button next to "Background" to disable.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.
  • Windows

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Click the green toggle button next to "Background" to disable.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.
  • iOS

    1. From Home, tap the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Tap Change background.
    3. Click the green toggle button next to "Include background" to disable.
    4. Tap Done to save your changes.
  • Android

    1. From Home, tap the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Tap Change background.
    3. Click the green toggle button next to "Include background" to disable.
    4. Tap Done to save your changes.
  • Web

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Click the green toggle button next to "Background" to disable.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.

Add widgets

As an Evernote Premium, Personal, Professional, or Teams customer, you have access to additional widgets. To add a widget, follow the steps for your operating system below.

  • Mac

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Drag an available widget from the right side and drop it into a widget slot.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.
  • Windows

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Drag an available widget from the right side and drop it into a widget slot.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.
  • iOS

    1. From Home, tap the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Tap the plus icon next to an available widget from the "Available Widgets" section.
    3. Tap Done to save your changes.
  • Android

    1. From Home, tap the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Tap the plus icon next to an available widget from the "Available Widgets" section.
    3. Tap Done to save your changes.
  • Web

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Drag an available widget from the right side and drop it into a widget slot.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.

Remove widgets

To remove a widget, follow the steps for your operating system below.

  • Mac

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Click the 'x' in the upper right corner of the widget.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.
  • Windows

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Click the 'x' in the upper right corner of the widget.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.
  • iOS

    1. From Home, tap the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Tap the minus icon next to a widget from the list of widgets.
    3. Tap Done to save your changes.
  • Android

    1. From Home, tap the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Tap the minus icon next to a widget from the list of widgets.
    3. Tap Done to save your changes.
  • Web

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Click the 'x' in the upper right corner of the widget.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.

Reorder widgets

Reorder your widgets to arrange them in an order that works best for you. Your desktop widget layout will sync across Mac, Windows, and Web. Your mobile widget layout can be ordered differently and will sync across iOS and Android. To reorder your widgets, follow the steps for your operating system below.

  • Mac

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Drag and drop the widgets in the order you would like them to appear.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.
  • Windows

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Drag and drop the widgets in the order you would like them to appear.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.
  • iOS

    1. From Home, tap the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Drag the three-lines handlebar to the right of a widget to move it up or down the list.
    3. Tap Done to save your changes.

    Note: Widgets appear in Home in the order they are listed on this screen (top to bottom).

  • Android

    1. From Home, tap the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Drag the three-lines handlebar to the right of a widget to move it up or down the list.
    3. Tap Done to save your changes.

Resize widgets

This option is only available on Mac, Windows, and Web.

Widgets can be resized to small, medium, or large. Widgets cannot be resized vertically, and cannot be resized on mobile devices. To resize your widgets, follow the steps for your operating system below.

  • Mac

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Hover your cursor over the widget and select a size at the bottom right.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.
  • Windows

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Hover your cursor over the widget and select a size at the bottom right.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.
  • Web

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Hover your cursor over the widget and select a size at the bottom right.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.

Set up a custom view of your notes

As an Evernote Personal, Professional or Teams customer, you can use the filtered notes widget to show exactly the notes you want based on the criteria you select. To learn more about search filters, visit Filter your notes list.

  • Mac

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Drag the filtered notes widget from the right side and drop it into a widget slot.
    3. In the "Set up filters" window, rename the widget and select your filters from the options provided.
    4. Click Done to save your changes.

    To edit your filters, click the More actions (three dots) button and select Edit filters.

  • Windows

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Drag the filtered notes widget from the right side and drop it into a widget slot.
    3. In the "Set up filters" window, rename the widget and select your filters from the options provided.
    4. Click Done to save your changes.

    To edit your filters, click the More actions (three dots) button and select Edit filters.

  • iOS

    1. From Home, tap the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Tap the plus icon next to "Filtered Notes" from the "Available Widgets" section.
    3. Add a name to the widget and select your filters from the options provided.
    4. Tap Done to save your changes.

    2. Tap the plus icon next to "Filtered Notes" from the "Available Widgets" section.
    3. Add a name to the widget and select your filters from the options provided.
    4. Tap Done to save your changes.

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.

Change scratch pad color and title

As an Evernote Premium, Personal, Professional or Teams customer, you can change the color and title of your scratch pad(s).

To change the color and title of your scratch pad widget(s), follow the steps for your operating system below.

  • Mac

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Click the pencil icon in the scratch pad widget to edit the title and choose from four color options.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.
  • Windows

    1. From Home, click the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Click the pencil icon in the scratch pad widget to edit the title and choose from four color options.
    3. Click Done to save your changes.
  • iOS

    1. From Home, tap the Customize button in the upper right corner.
    2. Tap the pencil icon in the scratch pad widget to edit the title and choose from four color options.

    1. From the scratch pad widget, tap on the More actions button (three dots) in the upper right corner.
    2. Select Edit widget to edit the title and choose from four color options.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change the screen that appears each time I open Evernote?

When you open Evernote on iOS, Android, or Web, you will see Home by default. When you open Evernote for Mac or Windows, you will see the screen you were on the last time you used Evernote.

Can I disable Home?

No.

Does Home customization sync across my devices?

Yes. Your Home customization on desktop will sync across Mac, Windows, and Web. Your Home customization on mobile can be different and will sync across iOS and Android.

Can I have more than one copy of the same widget? For example, two scratch pads?

Customers with Evernote Professional or Teams can have multiple scratch pad, pinned note, and filtered note widgets. Simply add the additional copies of the widget from the Customize panel.

Can I use an existing saved search for the filtered notes widget?

Yes. On the "Set up filters" screen, click Apply saved search and select the saved search you'd like to use. Keep in mind, if you make any changes to the saved search criteria from this window, the changes will not be reflected in the saved search itself. Similarly, if you make any changes to the saved search criteria outside of the filtered notes widget, changes will not be applied to the widget.
