Sync update: faster and more efficient with RENT metadata sync

In August 2024, Evernote has released a significant update to its syncing infrastructure called RENT, which stands for Remaining ENTities. This new metadata sync process provides faster synchronization and improves the overall user experience across all devices.

Main benefits of the new sync process:

  1. Changes made on one device, such as your desktop, will now appear almost instantly on other devices, like mobile.
  2. Shared notes will now show up in your account immediately, making collaboration more seamless.
  3. The app launches faster across all devices, ensuring a smoother user experience.
  4. The Evernote database on your device is now up to 70% smaller and 20% faster, leading to more efficient performance.
  5. With RENT, all sync-related tasks are unified under one system, which simplifies development and accelerates the release of new features and improvements.

What is RENT?

RENT is Evernote's new metadata sync process that focuses on syncing important information within your account, such as notes, notebooks, workspaces, tags, profiles, and sharing permissions.

How metadata syncing works:

  • Metadata includes crucial details like note existence, names, deletions, access permissions, and edit histories.
  • Previously, Evernote used a "polling" system where devices would receive updates at set intervals. This caused delays in reflecting changes.
  • With RENT, updates are now continuously shared with devices, ensuring real-time synchronization across different accounts and devices.

Benefits of RENT for platform reliability:

  • The RENT sync process aligns all of Evernote’s sync operations under a unified system, reducing the complexity of the codebase.
  • By moving away from the older "Monolith" codebase to a micro-services architecture, Evernote reduces the chance of bugs and improves overall platform stability and reliability.

RENT is available for all Evernote accounts using version 10.101 and up.

While we've worked hard to keep your Evernote experience consistent, some workflows may change due to the new sync structure. If you have any questions or experience any issues, please contact our support team.
