Ending Evernote support for macOS versions 10.15 and below

Ending Evernote support for macOS versions 10.15 and below

At Evernote, we’re committed to providing the best possible experience. To ensure we can continue to deliver top-notch security and performance, Evernote will no longer support macOS version 10.15 and below, which have not received security updates for almost 3 years. This change will go into effect on March 17, 2025.

💥 We encourage anyone using a macOS version 10.15 to update to the latest available version at the earliest possible moment. You can use this guide from Apple.

If you’re not sure whether this new policy applies to you, you can quickly check by following this short guide. If the macOS version currently installed on your device is 10.15, it’s a legacy version and what follows applies to you. Please read this article carefully to make sure you can continue to enjoy Evernote to the fullest going forward.

I'm currently running a macOS 10.15—what will happen to my Evernote experience after March 17, 2025?

By updating your macOS before March 17, you'll be able to use Evernote as usual and take advantage of our weekly improvements. For these reasons, we strongly encourage you to update your macOS to the latest available version at the earliest possible moment using this helpful guide.

⚠️ If you don’t update your macOS system, you may experience trouble using Evernote:

  • If you continue to use macOS 10.15 and DO NOT update your operating system before March 17, you will still be able to use Evernote, but you will no longer receive weekly updates, which include exciting new features, important bug fixes, and impactful performance improvements.
    • If you have a version downloaded from evernote.com/download, you will only be able to update the app up to the last compatible version.
    • If you have a version downloaded from the App Store, you will not be able to update it to a newer version, even if compatible, nor reinstall it.
  • If you continue to use macOS 10.15 and DO update your Evernote Desktop app after March 17 via evernote.com/download, you will not be able to use Evernote until you also update your macOS to a version higher than 10.15. This is because versions of Evernote released after March 17 will no longer support macOS 10.15.

Please note that we will eventually fully decommission versions of Evernote Desktop which rely on legacy macOS. At that time, it will be necessary to upgrade your operating system to continue using Evernote.

Why are we implementing this change on Evernote?

  • Overall security. macOS version 10.15 has not been supported by Apple for almost 3 years, which means it no longer receives security updates or technical support. Computers running this operating system are vulnerable to new malware and other exploits that won't be patched, leading to poor device performance and crashes.
  • A better Evernote experience. Supporting an outdated operating system creates technical debt and limitations within Evernote. By no longer supporting legacy operating systems, we can implement several changes that will unlock key improvements to the overall Evernote experience.
