Use your finger or stylus to add sketches directly in Evernote. Insert diagrams and handwritten notes right alongside your photos, audio recordings, and file attachments. Evernote recognizes handwritten text inside your notes so you can search for it later.

Add a sketch
To add a sketch to a note, follow the instructions for your operating system below.

iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
- From any opened note in edit mode, tap on the blue plus sign icon (+) at the top left of the keyboard, then tap Sketch.
- Sketching tools appear at the bottom of the screen. Tap the pen or highlighter to start sketching notes with your finger or stylus.
- Tap Done to save. Images resize to fit perfectly inside your note. Sketches are saved as .PNG images that can be downloaded, and edited on other iOS and Android devices.
Older version of Evernote for iOS
- From any opened note in edit mode, tap the pen button or tap the paperclip, then select ‘Ink’ (pen).
- Sketching tools appear at the top of the screen. Tap the pen or highlighter to start sketching notes with your finger or stylus.
- Tap Done to save. Images resize to fit perfectly inside your note. Ink sketches are saved as .PNG images that can be annotated, downloaded, and edited on other iOS and Android devices. Once annotated, handwriting images can’t be edited.
Note: You can change the line weight on any device that supports 3D Touch by adjusting your writing pressure. This works with the Apple Pencil.

Add a sketch: Opens up a blank canvas for you to add a sketch to a note.
Pen: Write or draw freeform strokes in a variety of colors and sizes.
Highlighter: Add semi-transparent color to your sketch.
Eraser: Remove any unwanted strokes. Tap a second time, and select ‘Clear All’ to clear the entire canvas.
Selection: Select, copy, cut, or move parts of a sketch around. To select an object, draw a border around it. Once selected, simply drag the object to move it to a new location. To cut and copy, long press anywhere inside the selection border, then long press again outside the border to paste.

Undo: Undo the action most recently performed.
Redo: Reverse the action most recently undone.
Rotate: Rotate entire image 90 degrees in a counter-clockwise direction.
Note: Once you start drawing, the canvas locks the orientation (portrait or landscape).

How do I edit an existing sketch?
The new Evernote for iOS: Hide your keyboard if it's open and tap on the sketch, tap the 3 dot icon at the bottom of the screen, then tap Edit sketch.
