Encrypt text in a note to add an extra level of protection to private information, such as account information, travel details, and personal letters. While you can encrypt the text content within a note, you cannot encrypt an entire note or notebook.

Encrypt text

To encrypt text in a note, follow the steps for your operating system below.

  • Mac

    1. Open a note and highlight the text you wish to encrypt.
    2. Right-click the highlighted text and select Encrypt Selected Text.
    3. Enter a chosen passphrase into the form. Do not forget this passphrase, as you will need to enter this passphrase whenever you attempt to decrypt this text. Evernote does not store this information anywhere.
    4. After entering a passphrase, you can opt to have the passphrase remembered temporarily until you quit Evernote by checking the box next to “Remember passphrase until I quit Evernote”. Otherwise, leave the box unchecked.
    5. Once you set and confirm the passphrase, select Encrypt. The text will be encrypted and will require the passphrase each time you would like to reveal the text.
