Use presentation mode to present notes
Presentation mode is the best way to show off your thoughts in a beautiful and simple way. Collect everything into one or more Evernote notes and select one button to start presenting. Presentation mode is useful for presenting your notes, whether your audience is a large group viewing a large screen or a small team gathered around your laptop.
Presentation mode is an Evernote Premium and Evernote Business feature, but all new users get a 30-day free trial.
Present everything quickly
To start presenting your notes, select the presentation mode (projection screen) button at the top of the note you're viewing or editing, and simply scroll up and and down through the entire note.
Works with all your notes
Presentation mode works with any of your existing notes and doesn't require you to spend extra time or effort in preparing your content.
With one click of a button, presentation mode expands your note to the dimensions of your monitor so that everyone in a group can clearly see the details of your note, whether it's text, images, or attached PDF or MS Office files.
Use the layout editor to customize your presentation
By default, Evernote will present your note as one long, scrollable note on the screen. If you want more control over how you want a note is displayed, you can divide up a long note into smaller sections. You have the option of displaying this note in smaller sections, a screen at a time.
Access the presentation layout editor
In presentation mode, click the layout editor button (rectangle with one smaller partition) at the top right corner (Mac) or click the gray tab near the right edge of the screen (Windows) to slide the layout editor tray out. If you've divided a note into multiple screens, the layout editor lets you use the thumbnails to preview how each screen will be displayed.
Divide a note into multiple screens
There are a few of advantages to presenting a note as multiple screens:
- Provide context and organization: You could, for instance, start by presenting a title screen, then follow it with a list of topics or an agenda to let viewers know what to expect.
- Maintain focus: Presenting a little content at a time helps you stay focused and keeps viewers engaged.
- Simplify navigation: Once you're ready to move on to the next point or topic, simply tap the spacebar (or the right and left arrows) on your keyboard, and avoid having to worry about how far to scroll up or down the note.
Add, remove, and slide the blue lines up and down to specify how much content you want to display on the screen at a time.
To add and remove line breaks, select the blue plus sign (+) and the blue minus sign (-) buttons located next to the note thumbnails:
- Blue lines: 'Line breaks' or 'screen breaks' to indicate that the content below the line will display on the following screen
- Blue dots: Markers that appear to the right of the note indicate where you can insert a screen break. These dots display as plus or minus signs when you hover over them. Select the plus sign to add a screen break and the minus sign to remove a screen break.
Automatic layouts currently available on Evernote for Mac only
Two ways to automatically transform a note into multiple screens using the layout editor:
- Auto layout
- Auto-convert horizontal rules into screen breaks
Open the layout editor, then select one of the following options:
- Auto layout: Scroll up to the top of the tray and select Auto layout. Auto layout automatically creates a title screen using your note title and inserts additional screen breaks around any images and tables found in a note.
- Auto-convert horizontal rules: Once you've added some horizontal rules (line breaks) inside a note, open the layout editor, scroll up to the top of the tray, and select Convert horizontal rules.
Note: You can insert horizontal rules before and after content Evernote considers as one unit, such as sentences, paragraphs, bulleted or numbered lists, images, and PDF or MS Office file previews. In other words, you can't split up a sentence or list using horizontal rules.
Move through multi-screen presentations
Use the following keystroke combinations to navigate through a presentation:
- Up and down arrows: Scroll up and down through the note
- Spacebar: Move to the next section of a note
- Shift + [Spacebar]: Return to the previous section of a note
Navigate to the next and previous note within the same notebook (Mac):
- Next note: Use Cmd + right arrow
- Previous note: Use Cmd + left arrow

Highlight content using the laser pointer tool
In presentation mode, your mouse becomes a laser pointer with a bright trail so you can call attention to parts of your note. Click on the laser pointer button, a circle with the currently selected color (Mac) or an arrow (Windows), and choose a pointer color.
Note: You can also press Ctrl + P to change the cursor and pointer colors.
Select the preferred display mode
Switch between day and night modes (by selecting the button that toggles between a sun and moon icon) to change how your presentation looks:
- Day mode (white background, dark text): Select the sun tool to display presentations as dark text on light background in (default) day mode
- Night mode (dark background, white text): Select the moon tool to display presentations as light text on a dark background in night mode
Increase or decrease displayed font sizes (Mac)
Evernote lets you select from three pre-defined font sizes in presentation mode. The fonts are scaled to your projector screen size. To increase font size, select from one of the three pre-defined font sizes from the presentation mode toolbar (or press Cmd + plus sign (+) or Cmd + minus sign (-))
Open attached and linked media during a presentation
- Preview attached PDFs: Click on a PDF during your presentation to open a full-screen preview on a native PDF viewer you have installed.
- Preview any picture, link, or MS Office attachment: During a presentation, click on an image for a full-screen preview. Use arrow keys to quickly switch between attachments as in a slideshow. You can launch presentation mode simply by double-clicking on an image inside a note (Mac).
- Zoom in on an image: On Mac, double-click on an image during a presentation for a close-up view. This is particularly useful when images are added to and resized to fit inside a table, a feature currently available on Evernote for Mac. On Windows, click once on an image during a presentation, then select an option when you hover your cursor in the top left corner of the screen (view image at a 1:1 ratio, zoom to fill screen, zoom in/out).
Create a 'table of contents' section to present multiple notes
When you click to follow a note link during presentation mode, your presentation will move to the new note. Press Cmd + open bracket ([) (Mac) to return to the original note. This makes it easy to use one note to guide your presentation, such as a table of contents or agenda note with lots of links.
Share presentation as a PDF (Mac)
To export a presentation as a PDF that you email to others, right-click while in presentation mode and select Export Presentation as PDF from the menu options.
Share presentations on a secondary monitor
There may be instances, such as when presenting to a large group, when you'll want to share presentations on a secondary monitor, or project them onto a larger screen.
Set up your secondary monitor from System Preferences (Mac) or the Control Panel (Windows). On Evernote for Mac, you can even edit a note on your laptop screen while presenting it on a large screen. To do this, simply disable screen "mirroring" before you start presentation mode. Select the 'Change Screen' (Ctrl + S) button while in presentation mode to select which monitor to display your notes on.
