Stacks are an organizational structure used to group notebooks together and are typically used for notebooks that have a similar topic or theme. Notebook stacks are only visible to you. In addition, the individual notebooks (and the notes within them) that make up a stack can be shared, but the stack itself cannot be shared.

To create a stack, follow the steps for your operating system below.

  • Mac

    The new Evernote for Mac

    1. In the left panel, select Notebooks to open the notebook list view to the right.
    2. Click the More actions button (three dots), next to the notebook you would like to add to a stack.
    3. Select Add to stack from the drop-down menu, then select New stack to create a new stack or select a stack name to add to an existing stack.

    Older version of Evernote for Mac

    1. In the left panel, select Notebooks to open the notebook list view to the right.
    2. In the notebook list view, drag and drop one notebook on to another notebook. A new notebook stack containing both notebooks will be created.
    3. Right-click the newly created stack, select Rename to name the stack.
    4. Drag and drop any other notebooks you want to include on to the new notebook stack to add notebooks to it.
  • Windows

    The new Evernote for Windows

    1. In the left panel, select Notebooks to open the notebook list view to the right.
    2. Click the More actions button (three dots), next to the notebook you would like to add to a stack.
    3. Select Add to stack from the drop-down menu, then select New stack to create a new stack or select a stack name to add to an existing stack.

    Older version of Evernote for Windows

    1. Click the small arrow next to Notebooks in the left panel to expand the drop down notebook list.
    2. Drag and drop one notebook on to another notebook. A new notebook stack containing both notebooks will be created.
    3. Right-click the newly created stack, select Rename to name the stack.
    4. Drag and drop any other notebooks you want to include.
  • iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

    The new Evernote for iOS

    1. From within a notebook, tap the More actions button (three dots), then tap Move to stack.
    2. You can either tap New stack to create a new stack or select an existing stack.


    Older version of Evernote for iOS

    1. From within a notebook, tap the options menu (three dots), then tap Notebook Settings.
    2. Tap Stack. You can either enter a stack name to create a new stack or select an existing stack.
  • Android

    The new Evernote for Android

    1. From within a notebook, tap the More actions button (three dots), then tap Move to stack.
    2. You can either tap New stack to create a new stack or select an existing stack.


    Older version of Evernote for Android

    1. From the notebook list, press and hold the notebook you'd like to assign to a stack.
    2. Select Move to stack or Move to new stack.
  • Web

    The new Evernote Web

    1. In the left panel, select Notebooks to open the notebook list view to the right.
    2. Click the More actions button (three dots) next to the notebook you would like to add to a stack.
    3. Select Add to stack from the drop-down menu, then select New stack to create a new stack or select a stack name to add to an existing stack.


    Older version of Evernote Web

    1. Click Notebooks in the sidebar to open your notebooks list.
    2. Drag and drop one notebook on to another notebook.
    3. Enter a name for the new notebook stack, then click Create Stack.
    4. Add additional notebooks to the stack using the same steps above.
