Change the sort order of your notes

Evernote offers several options to sort your list of notes.

Sorting behavior

  • Note list sorting: When you change the sorting of the note list, it’s applied across all clients.
  • Search result sorting: When you change the sorting of search results, Evernote remembers the last sort order used on each specific device and applies it to future searches on that device.
    • Note: On mobile, search results will always be sorted by relevance.
  • Notebook sorting: When you change the sorting within a specific notebook, that setting is applied across clients, but only for that notebook. You can set a different sort order for each notebook.

How to change the sorting order

Follow the instructions below based on your platform.

  • Web and Desktop (Mac and Windows)

    1. Click the Sort options icon (downward arrow) at the top of the note list.
    2. Choose a sort setting under the “Sort By” heading.

To sort by Reminder date, switch to the Reminders tab, then click the Sort options icon.

  • Mobile (iPhone, iPad, and Android)

    1. Tap the More actions button (three dots) at the top of the note list.
    2. Tap Sort by and select your desired sort settings. Tap on the arrow icon to invert the sort order (toggle between ascending and descending order).

Note: When sorting by Title, Evernote uses ASCII character order. For more information, visit this page.
