Note links allow you to link from one note to another note, making it easy to quickly jump between notes within Evernote, or to reference a note in an third-party app. Some examples where this might be helpful:

  • You keep a running log of weekly meeting notes. You can create a "Meeting Notes" note, then link to the individual weekly meeting notes which are written in individual notes.
  • You are writing a novel. You can create a table of contents note which links to each chapter, or you can add a "Next chapter" link at the end of each note which allows you to jump to the next note.
  • You want to reference a shared note in chat message. You can copy the note link into any messaging app, and the receiver of the message will be able to immediately jump to it.

Note: If you share a note link, the recipient will only be able to view the note if they already have access to it. In other words, sharing a note link with someone is not the same as sharing a note with that person. To learn how to share a note, visit Share notes.

Opening a note link outside Evernote

Clicking or tapping on a note link outside Evernote will have slightly different results depending on your device.

On a mobile device, tapping on the note link will immediately open the Evernote app (assuming it is installed) and navigate you to the corresponding note.

On a Mac or Windows device, clicking on the link will open the Evernote web client at the corresponding note in your browser. If it is your first time, you will be prompted with the popup shown in figure, that lets you decide whether you want to stay in the browser or open the native desktop app instead. You can save that preference by checking the "Remember my choice" checkbox. If you don't, the popup will appear again the next time you open a note link. Your choice can be changed any time by clicking on the Settings button (gear) next to your name at the top of the left navigation menu and then scrolling to the "Open links in" section.

Advanced tip: Besides the standard note link, on the Mac and Windows version on Evernote you can copy an internal link to your note using the dedicated keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + Alt + CMD + C on Mac and Ctrl + Alt + Shift + C on Windows). Clicking on an internal link will immediately open the Mac or Windows application, without opening the web version on the browser first. Internal links are meant for advanced users who want to minimize the delay when opening a link on their desktop client, but they will not work on mobile or on the web version, as opposed to note links.
