Customize keyboard shortcuts
You can customize any of the global keyboard shortcuts to make Evernote work better for you. If you have a Personal, Professional, or Teams subscription, you can customize additional keyboard shortcuts.
Global keyboard shortcuts
Global keyboard shortcuts allow you to trigger certain Evernote functions by using a unique key combination on your keyboard, even when Evernote is in the background. There are currently five global keyboard shortcuts you can customize:
- New note window
- Paste to Evernote
- Search in Evernote
- Open Evernote Helper
- Capture screen
Note: This article only refers to keyboard shortcuts in the new Evernote for Mac and the new Evernote for Windows, in versions 10.9 and newer.
Customize your shortcuts
To customize your shortcuts, go to Help > Keyboard Shortcuts from the menu bar, or use Cmd + / (Mac) or Ctrl + / (Windows) on your keyboard. The Keyboard Shortcuts panel will slide open from the right side of the app. To customize a shortcut, double click on the shortcut and type a new key combination. It will save automatically.
Restore defaults
To restore the default shortcuts, click the More actions button (three dots) in the Keyboard Shortcuts panel, then click Restore defaults.
Frequently asked questions
Will you be adding more customizable shortcuts, or allowing customization on other existing shortcuts?
Yes. This article outlines what is currently available for customization, and we will continue to update it as more options become available.
Why does my shortcut do something different than expected?
Many apps offer global keyboard shortcuts, so you'll want to be sure that you're using a unique key combination that isn't already in use by another app. If you find that the shortcut you enter launches a different app or performs a different behavior than you expected, you may need to figure out where the conflict exists and correct it.
Why won't my desired key combination save?
There may be a few reasons for this.
- You may have entered a key combination that is already in use. In this case, you'll see an error message that indicates that your chosen key combination is used by another shortcut. Click anywhere to reset to the default, then try a new, unique key combination.
- You may have entered an invalid key combination. The key combination must include one modifier key (shift, cmd, ctrl, tab, option, win key, etc.) followed by one non-modifier key (alphabet, number, function key, etc.).
Why can't I customize all of my shortcuts?
All Evernote customers can customize their global keyboard shortcuts. Customers with a Personal, Professional, or Teams subscription can customize additional shortcuts. Editor-related shortcuts, such as those like copy (Cmd/Ctrl+C) and paste (Cmd/Ctrl+V), and text formatting shortcuts, such as bold (Cmd/Ctrl+B), are not editable.
